Two special birthdays for Sandusky County’s oldest veteran and his wife were celebrated on August 21 during the Hayes Presidential Verandah Concert.

The North Coast Big Band played “Happy Birthday” for the couple in celebration of Juanita Robinett’s 95th birthday on August 22 and Ned Robinett’s 101st birthday this Sunday. The crowd was estimated at 300 people and the Ladies Who Walk donated cupcakes for everyone.

“They were wonderful at Spiegel Grove,” said Juanita Robinett. “They had special chairs set up for us and a sign printed right next to us. There was ice cream and cupcakes. The cupcakes were covered in red, white and blue frosting to honor Ned’s service. They gave me a bouquet of red roses and Ned a bucket of goodies, including a bottle of wine.”

The Robinetts are members of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums and regularly attend concerts at Spiegel Grove. Ned is a World War II veteran. The couple has been married for 70 years.

Another concert in Hayes this summer

While this was the last regular porch concert of the season, there will be another one as part of the American Roots concert series, which has been rescheduled for September 11.

Common Chords featuring Robert Jones and Matt Watroba will perform on the porch of the historic Hayes Home at 7 p.m. An old-fashioned ice cream meet-up will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free. Participants of the ice cream eating event can donate for the refreshments. The public is asked to bring chairs or blankets for the seating on the lawn.

The concert with Common Chords was originally scheduled for June 26, but was postponed due to rain.
