Blood Assurance is offering gift cards to donors on Labor Day weekend

This Labor Day, Blood Assurance is asking potential blood donors for help in addressing critical supply shortages and low donation numbers.

By donating blood and/or platelets, not only can the historic blood shortage during the holiday weekend be combated, but donors also receive a special award.

Earlier this week, Blood Assurance announced it would offer $20 gift cards to all donors who participate between Monday, August 26, and Sunday, September 1. Anyone who donates on Wednesday, September 11 will receive a 9/11 commemorative T-shirt.

“We understand that many people are busy with their holiday plans on Labor Day, but the need for blood donations never goes away,” said Garry Allison, senior vice president of operations at Blood Assurance. “By offering $20 gift cards to all donors, we hope to encourage more people to take a moment to donate and save lives.”

Blood Assurance is the primary supplier for most hospitals in Middle Tennessee, including Maury Regional Medical Center. According to a press release, the company’s blood supply relies primarily on donors and is used to treat trauma victims, cancer patients and patients undergoing surgery.

This is especially critical during the holidays, when not only is there more travel and other social activities, but supplies are also typically at their lowest.

“All blood types are urgently needed and you can visit any Blood Assurance blood donation center or mobile blood drive to participate,” the press release said. “Donating blood is a quick and safe process that takes about an hour from start to finish.”

Blood Assurance’s Columbia location is located at 1412 Trotwood Ave. in the Neely’s Mill Shopping Center. To schedule a blood donation, visit www.BloodAssurance.com/schedule, call (800) 962-0628 or text BAGIVE to 999777.

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent), weigh at least 50 kg and be in good health. Donors are also encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and eat a hearty meal before donating.
