John Cena recently announced that he does not want children and talked about how he communicated this decision to his wife.
During his performance on Club Shay ShayThe professional wrestler and actor spoke about parenthood, especially now that he is married. Cena explained that he decided against having children because he would rather focus on experiencing everything else life has to offer.
“I don’t want them,” Cena says in the video below. “I’m curious about life and I know how much effort it takes. And my biggest fear is that as an ambitious – often stubborn and selfish – person, I try to approach the world with kindness and curiosity, but I don’t think I’m personally willing and never will be to put in the time it takes to be a great parent because I want to live life as it is.”
He continued: “And I still have a lot to do. And I still want to do a lot. I have a wonderful partner with whom I do this. We have had open conversations about it. We share the same values.”
Cena then shared that he had “awkward conversations” with his wife Shay Shariatzadeh during their first and second dates. Despite the awkwardness, Cena said those conversations were “great” because they allowed them both to work through those difficult moments together, which helped them build a strong foundation for their relationship. He also mentioned that some people can be biased towards those who openly say they don’t want kids.
“(It’s) human nature. We’re all biased. I’d like to think I operate on the principle that everyone can live their life well,” Cena said, before going on to discuss how he’s been comfortable with the decision since his teenage years. “My opinions only get into that gray area during emotionally difficult times. And I’m very comfortable with my position. I have a lot of joy and fulfillment in my life. And that’s pretty much my position.”
Cena and Shariatzadeh began dating in 2019, a year after he ended his relationship with former professional wrestler Nikki Garcia. In that relationship, Cena was willing to reverse his vasectomy to have children with Garcia, but she did not want him to regret it, which led to their breakup.
