The name change is intended to honor Kendrick, who was a graduating class at the school. Kendrick was only 18 years old when he attacked one of the shooters before being shot. Two classmates have since been sentenced to life in prison.

“The more days that go by, the harder it gets,” Kendrick’s father, John Castillo, said during the public hearing. “We are very honored that the decision has been made to rename Lucent Boulevard, a street that I drive on every day. It’s good that we remember our heroes who sacrificed their lives and that we remember what happened so that we can improve mental health resources and … fund our police and give them the resources that they need.”

Lucent Boulevard will be changed from County Line Road to South Broadway to Kendrick Castillo Way.
