Saranac shares in the sights of the Big Torpedo

Bred in New York The big torpedo will attempt to beat five open stakes rivals on August 30 in the $175,000 Saranac Stakes (G3T), a 1 1/16-mile race on grass Saratoga Racetrack.

The three-year-old son of Big Brown now he is testing a rated company for the first time. In his only other appearance in an open race he finished second in the Woodhaven Stakes in Aqueduct Racetrack in April for trainer Tom Morley and owners Thomas Albrecht, Vincent Fusaro and James Klein. Regular rider Eric Cancel returns in the saddle.

“This will be a big step up to the next level,” said Morley. “In his last two starts he has been up against stallions, but Eric has complete confidence in this horse.”

The chestnut has never run over 1 1/16 miles but has run all eight races from six furlongs to a mile. He carries 122 pounds, which puts him above all his rivals. The race has one entrant who competes only on the main track.
