Traveling between Austin and Houston is a fact of life for any Austinite, whether for business, pleasure, or family. The roughly two-and-a-half to three-hour drive can get pretty boring, so it’s worth planning a stop or two for food, gas, and bathroom breaks along US Route 290, SH 71, and I-10.

Eater Austin has rounded up the best food and drink stops along the busy stretch between Austin and Houston. There’s the popular highway gas station/convenience store Buc-ee’s, kolashes from Hruska’s and Weikel’s, barbecue from Truth BBQ, sausages from Meyer’s Elgin Smokehouse, mead from Blissful Folly Farm, pecan pie machine Berdoll’s, and more.

There are plenty of restaurants to explore in Houston. And remember, there’s always a Whataburger somewhere serving burgers and honey biscuit sandwiches. For other off-the-beaten-path Texas routes, Eater Houston recommends the Dallas-Houston route, and Eater Dallas has taken on the Dallas-Austin route. Similar Texas city maps include Eater Austin’s Round Top guide and Eater Austin’s Katy guide.

This map is geographically arranged from west to east.
