Phillies have found the most creative way to set the order in the Fantasy Football Draft

Uninformed spectators would have thought that the Philadelphia Phillies, who traded Louisville Sluggers for golf clubs before Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros, were practicing for a team outing on the golf course.

No, the Phillies had a much funnier reason to get out the golf clubs.

They determined the order of selection in the team’s fantasy football league. One by one, the Phillies playing closest to the pin – in this case, that was the team’s physical therapist, Alex Plum, in catcher’s gear – stepped up to bat at Citizens Bank Park and struck out.

“Plum was our golf pin,” Phillies catcher Garrett Stubbs told Alex Coffey about The Philadelphia Inquirer. “He did not volunteer. He was volunteered.”

The idea, the players explained to Coffey, originally came from former Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins, now a member of the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoskins’ idea has since been expanded to include the, er, human pin.

Ultimately, Phillies catcher JT Realmuto, an avid golfer who participated in the Farmer’s Insurance Pro Am at Torrey Pines in January 2024, won the competition and was selected as the first pick in the fantasy football draft.

The Oakland Athletics also came up with a creative way to determine the order of their fantasy football drafts by playing a sort of weird version of bocce ball on the upper deck of the Oakland Coliseum.

Never change, boys.
