Revelation: London’s Boiler Room set closed due to overcrowding

Disclosure’s gig at London’s Boiler Room at the weekend had to be cancelled after a crowd rush at the Lee Valley Showground in Waltham Cross.

The duo were announced as performers during the event three days before the August 25 event. Other artists on the lineup included Sara Landry, Flowdan, Giggs and Rosey Gold.

Per MixmagWhen Disclosure’s performance was announced, only 100 tickets were still available for sale. These were sold out shortly afterwards.

An eyewitness reported Mixmag that attendees were queuing to get into the tent for about half an hour before Disclosure’s performance. A stampede then ensued as some forced their way into the tent through a gap that had been forced open. The duo’s performance was then interrupted after just five minutes so that security could deal with the developing problem.

Disclosure’s performance was subsequently cancelled entirely, but other artists continued to play their scheduled shows on the same stage.

“Unfortunately it’s out of our hands, but the festival has deemed it unsafe for us to play due to the demand,” the duo said in an Instagram story, sharing their disappointment and adding that they flew from LA to London specifically for the event.

This is not the first time in recent times that Boiler Room events have been marred by uncontrolled crowds.

Last month, Peggy Gou’s Boiler Room headlining performance in Seoul, South Korea, had to be cancelled due to overcrowding at the city’s SFactory. No casualties were reported, however 11 fire trucks and 42 firefighters were dispatched to the venue to assist.

“During the party, we encountered attendee flow issues, which raised safety concerns and resulted in the event being closed early,” Boiler Room wrote at the time.

It continued: “Contrary to reports, we sold up to the capacity specified by our partner in Seoul and were not at full capacity at the end of the event.”
