New opening hours for Big Red BBQ

STAUNTON — Charlie Nolley, owner of Big Red Barbecue at 108 N. Central Ave. in downtown Staunton, has a tough time staying open consistently. Between family issues and catering, it’s not always easy, Nolley said.

But he recently announced new hours that he hopes will be more consistent. Big Red will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be closed Sundays and Tuesdays.

If business gets stronger later in the day, Nolley might extend the hours, but since he does most of the work himself, he believes those times are manageable right now. Occasionally, he might run out of food earlier since he keeps everything fresh, which would mean he would have to close earlier. And sometimes he has a catering job that would change the hours. Otherwise, Nolley plans to be open on that schedule.

Big Red Barbecue offers hamburgers, pulled pork and chicken barbecue sandwiches, BLTs, fried chicken sandwiches, fried fish sandwiches and steak and cheese, as well as sides for the lunch menu. Nolley also offers barbecue by the pound and a kids’ menu.

There is also a breakfast menu with breakfast bowls, gravy, pancakes, eggs and more. Full menus are available on Big Red’s Facebook page.

Stuarts Draft Resident Co-Honours Graduate of the VBA School of Banking Management

STUART’S DRAFT – Katrina Huerth is one of two Carter Bank employees who recently graduated from the Virginia Bankers Association School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.

Huerth, a Stuarts Draft resident and alumnus of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, and Danielle Atwood not only graduated, but did so at the top of their class.

Huerth was one of the top graduates and had the same grade point average as him, while Atwood served as class president.

“Danielle and Katrina’s achievements at the Virginia Bankers Association School of Bank Management exemplify the dedication and leadership qualities that Carter Bank values,” said Litz Van Dyke, CEO of Carter Bank. “Their success at the top of their class in managing their demanding roles and personal responsibilities speaks volumes about their dedication and abilities. Not only are they exemplary individuals, but they are also an important asset to our team as they lead by example and inspire others to strive for excellence in their careers.”

Atwood, a project manager in Martinsville, and Huerth, a loan examiner from Charlottesville, both said the School of Banking helped them better understand the entire organization and how each department must work together to ensure the bank’s success.

“Bank School showed me that all parts of the bank need to collaborate and work together to be successful,” Huerth said. “The key to our success is that we rely on each other. It’s not a one-man show. We need to get out of our silos and help each other with new initiatives and processes and build the best bank in the communities we serve.”
