Westmorland and Furness Council boundary consultation underway

Westmorland and Furness Council boundary consultation underway

A public consultation on the changes to local electoral districts is underway.

As part of a review launched by the Local Government Boundary Commission, citizens were invited to help design new constituencies for Westmorland and Furness Council.

A previous consultation with the local authority indicated that 65 councillors would be needed for the area to function effectively, the same number as it currently has.

Public opinion will be sought to ensure that the “new districts reflect the size and shape of local communities”.

The public consultation began on Tuesday and will last ten weeks.

Commission chair Prof Colin Mellors urged people to take part, saying: “It can be as simple as where there are shops, schools or sports facilities, whether you see a road, park or river as a dividing element or the heart of a community, or where joint projects are carried out.”

Once the Commission has finalised its proposals, there will be another round of consultations.

The second phase of the public consultation is expected to begin on March 4, 2025, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England said.

The consultation relates to local election arrangements and is separate from the recent consultations across England on general election arrangements.
