Detroit Police Department celebrates 1,000 Project Green Light partners

DETROIT – Project Green Light Detroit celebrates 1,000 business partners.

The idea behind the Green Light project is to use cameras connected to the police to ensure the safety of the population.

The program was launched in 2016 with eight companies.

On Tuesday (August 27), the city held a ceremony to honor 1,000 business partners.

“I never imagined that one day we would have a thousand locations,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Duggan and Detroit Police Chief James White spoke at the ceremony about the need for this program.

“People just couldn’t safely go to a gas station in our city,” White said, referring to the time before the program started.

Officials said implementation of the program had resulted in a safer city.

To participate in the program, a company must install high-quality lighting and high-resolution cameras that transmit live to the Real Time Crime Center at Detroit Police Headquarters.

“There have been cases where someone has been harassed on the street and has driven to a traffic light because they knew they would be safe there,” Duggan said.

Several Project Green Light business owners attended the ceremony on Tuesday.

“It helps prevent a lot of crime,” said Kal Hannawa, a grocery store owner. “It should definitely be a requirement for everyone.”
