When Brenda Brix was diagnosed with cancer in October 2022, she already had an interior design firm, AMR Interior Design. But she decided she wouldn’t let fear stop her from pursuing another long-held dream: designing a custom furniture line that combined her love of fashion with functionality. “I didn’t want to be afraid to pursue my dreams anymore and approach this life with fearless enthusiasm,” she says.

During her treatment in 2023, Brix began working on a series of tables featuring eco-friendly elements such as natural stone and reclaimed wood. In January 2024, she launched the Brix&Co. luxury furniture line as an extension of AMR and her Serenity table collection. “I have always loved the beauty of natural stone and wanted to showcase the sustainable beauty of nature,” says Brix.

A hidden 6mm thick steel frame supports the natural stone frames of the tables and the wooden shelves embedded within. The stone is sourced from leftovers from commercial and residential construction projects, while the wood waste is from an industrial design company. Using these materials means they stay out of landfill and are given a second purpose. It also means no two tables are the same. Customers can also choose a stone that speaks to them personally, and this is then used by Brix to reflect the customers’ unique personality and home.

Whether the table serves as a focal point, conversation piece, or functional artwork, it draws attention and enhances any space. The tables are also a testament to the power of following your dreams. “Our goal is to bring joy and inspiration into people’s lives with these exquisite pieces by symbolizing the power of resilience and the pursuit of dreams,” says Brix.

This is what the judges said: “The Serenity Stone Table was crafted with great attention to detail and invites every customer to tell their own story.” Lara Presber

Made in Edmonton
$1,000 to $200,000
deltafiberglass.com

Delta Fiberglass windows from Durabuilt Windows and Doors are designed to withstand Alberta’s fickle weather and look good doing it. The (not-so-secret) reason for their success is the thoughtful innovation built into each frame and pane of glass. Durabuilt holds a patent for its Diamon-FusionR process for laminating fiberglass. Each window is moisture-resistant and scratch-resistant, and the process includes a silicone-like layer that prevents the glass surface from becoming porous or susceptible to wear.

With a wide range of customization options in different shapes, sizes, hardware, laminate finishes and colors, each window can be unique. Homeowners can personalize their windows to their taste and style to provide the best views inside and outside their home.

Meridiem Furniture began in 2023 as a partnership between three luthiers who shared a passion for design and woodworking, as well as an idea for a sophisticated stool style.

Every aspect of the Baseo stool’s production is handled in-house, from design to manufacturing to finishing. The manufacturing process begins with selecting the perfect wood to ensure the grain and color continue seamlessly. Baseo stools are made from white oak, ash, cherry and walnut and finished with either soap, oil or an environmentally friendly water-based varnish.

The stool’s design is characterized by its dramatically tapered profile, strong reverse-tapered legs, wide seat and curves. And the stool offers an easy way to add a touch of elegance to your home, whether indoors or outdoors, on the patio or in the garden.
