CFP Board announces 0,000 donation to College Scholars Program

The CFP Board announced that financial experts Charles and Judy Goldman have received a $500,000 donation to launch the Goldman Scholars program, which will provide financial assistance to college students completing the required Certified Financial Planner education through a CFP Board-registered undergraduate program.

The scholarship is open to U.S. third- and fourth-year college students from underrepresented backgrounds who demonstrate strong academic achievement and are enrolled in a CFP Board-registered program. The Goldman Scholars program provides up to $2,812.50 per student per year in financial aid paid directly to their academic institution. Four scholarships are awarded each year. Third-year college students can apply for a two-year scholarship. The application period opens August 27 and runs through October 7. Winners will be notified on December 2.

“This groundbreaking scholarship represents a tremendous opportunity for ambitious students,” said Kevin Keller, CEO of the CFP Board, in a statement. “We are grateful to the Goldmans for supporting the next generation of financial planners and helping to build a more diverse community of future CFP professionals.”

The Goldman Scholars program is designed to provide its recipients with more than just financial support on their path to CFP certification, the organization said. Over time, the program will seek to provide additional resources, such as professional development opportunities, job or internship placement assistance, and virtual or in-person networking events.

The Goldmans both had careers in the financial services sector. Judy worked in finance for 20 years before starting her own companies, including Design Studio Interior Solutions, an interior design firm, and Front Range Design Center, a logistics company for the construction industry.

“Philanthropy is a cornerstone of our lives and we are pleased to support students pursuing CFP certification,” Judy Goldman said in a statement. “By helping these students become CFP professionals, we are also expanding the public’s access to competent, ethical financial planning.”

Charles has held leadership positions at several financial services companies, including President and CEO of AssetMark Inc. He has also held leadership positions at Fidelity Investments and Charles Schwab and currently serves on the boards of several Genstar portfolio companies.

“We have been part of the financial planning community for decades and have benefited from this industry in many ways,” Charles Goldman said in a statement. “We are excited to establish a foundation that will help bring people from underserved communities into this wonderful industry.”
