The origin story of Shadow the Hedgehog was Sonic the Hedgehog 3The upcoming film stays as close to the original as possible. It was first released in 2001 Sonic Adventure 2Shadow has since become one of the most popular characters in the Sonic universe. Shadow was designed as the anti-Sonic in many ways, had a rather tragic backstory and was a perfect antagonist to the series’ hero before joining the good guys. After the success of the first Sonic the Hedgehog Film, It was only a matter of time before Shadow made his live-action debut.

While the year 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog focused mainly on the relationship between Sonic and Tom, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 brought more recognizable characters and elements from the games. The trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 confirms Shadow’s complete backstory from the games

Project Shadow, Maria and Gerald Robotnik are all here

Given Maria’s visit to Shadow’s containment tube, the GUM attack on the ARK facility and Jim Carrey’s role as Professor Gerald Robotnik, it is safe to say Sonic3 makes Shadow’s backstory from the games. In Sonic’s lore, Shadow was artificially created by Gerald Robotnik along with the United Federation as the ultimate weapon. Gerald Robotnik, Eggman’s grandfather, combined the DNA of a hedgehog with that of a sinister creature called Black Doom. While the United Federation wanted a weapon, Professor Robotnik also wanted to find a cure for his dying granddaughter.

It seems that
Sonic3
doesn’t shy away from being a bit darker and more serious than its predecessors.

Maria was the secret reason Professor Robotnik was working on Project Shadow, and she became close to Shadow during her grandfather’s experiments. Since he was only used as a test subject, Shadow’s only meaningful connection was with Maria. However, when GUN discovered that Robotnik had made a deal with Black Doom and began to fear the power of his creation, they invaded ARK and killed most of the researchers. Maria was killed in the attackProject Shadow was cancelled and GUN was finally able to recover Shadow’s escape pod. He was then put into hibernation.

Why Shadow The Hedgehog’s origin story is so important in Sonic

Shadows in Sonic 3

Shadow the Hedgehog’s design and personality – especially when compared to the rest of Team Sonic – would have been enough to make him a fan-favorite character. However, the fact that he was given a rich, tragic backstory that isn’t always found in video games aimed primarily at a younger audience made Shadow even more interesting. Most of Shadow’s appearances in games and other media have shown or at least referenced his backstory, which is why it remains so important. In addition, The origins of Shadow the Hedgehog are linked to other parts of Sonic history like ARK, Eggman’s family and the Black Arm.

It seems that Sonic3 doesn’t shy away from being a bit darker and more serious than the previous installments. The trailer even shows Maria’s death scene, with Shadow and Professor Eggman crying over her body while the GUN soldiers raid the ARK base. Shadow’s origins in the film may even reflect Sonic’s from the first part, which would make their rivalry even more interesting throughout the film.

Everything points to a great Shadow adaptation in Sonic 3

Shadow does the Akira Drift in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

After Sonic the Hedgehog 2 delivered what I thought was the perfect interpretation of Knuckles, I couldn’t wait to see how they would handle Shadow. He was teased in the post-credits scene of Sonic 2which referred to Project Shadow and offered a first look at the character. Shadow makes his live-action debut in Sonic3 became even more exciting after Keanu Reeves was cast in the rolewhich makes an old fan wish come true. Sonic3The trailer now confirms that not only did they get Shadow’s backstory right, but the character also looks and sounds great.

Keanu Reeves has been mentioned twice in the live-action Sonic universe, with both Sonic and Wade being fans of Speed.

Shadow even does an Akira slide in the Sonic3 Trailer that perfectly sums up how cool his character can be. Aside from all the cool visuals and the way he’s initially the opposite of Sonic, the most important thing about a Shadow adaptation is arguably getting his origin story right. Shadow’s connection to Maria and the fact that she wanted him to be good to the people of Earth can create a very emotional arc in Sonic the Hedgehog 3which now has all the prerequisites to become the best entry in the franchise.
