Everyone’s second favorite speedy blue hedgehog is back to fight even more baddies, and this time the gloves depart stay tuned again. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Is the latest installment in Sega’s Weird Alien Mammal Cinematic Universe. In the trailer, Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) in all their colorful glory team up to defeat humanity’s newest threat: Shadow the Hedgehog. In the film’s story, “Project Shadow” is a living weapon of sorts that has escaped from government captivity to wreak havoc on anyone in its wake. Keanu Reeves voices the sad furry-boi, and with his moody nature, cool, precise fighting style, and thirst for vengeance, this is essentially another John Wick Performance. Especially considering the revenge of it all.
“Shadow’s story began much like yours, Sonic,” an old, wise voice says in the trailer via voiceover. “But where you found family and friends, Shadow found only pain and loss.” As the voice (possibly Tom Butler, who plays Commander Walters?) explains this, Shadow is trapped in some kind of containment tube while a young girl holds a hand to the glass from outside. The shot mirrors the images of Shadow’s backstory in Sonic Adventure 2 And Shadow of the hedgehog, and if that is the case, this girl could be Dr. Robotnik’s deceased granddaughter Maria.
Speaking of Robotnik, Jim Carrey is back, now with a beer belly and an overall Gru-like disposition. He joins the good guys, which seems to be the main draw of this franchise after Knuckles went from fighting to joining the gang. The film takes place after the ankle series on Paramount+, and in the trailer, Elba sounds like he’s still having too much fun voicing the bookish, tough echidna.
