Cardinals player John Mozeliak will reportedly fulfill his contract after this season

The St. Louis Cardinals are one of baseball’s oldest franchises with a storied history spanning years, championship seasons and high expectations.

The last time the Cardinals were considered serious World Series contenders was in 2022, when St. Louis finished with a 93-69 record and won the National League Central by seven games.

Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak has been heavily criticized for his costly decisions over the past few seasons, and although St. Louis fans are calling for his resignation, it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

“All indications are that Mozeliak will fulfill his contract and that ownership will welcome him fulfilling his contract, and that Mozeliak has said — I’ll write this again — that he wants to create a clear plan where other voices gain influence and volume in the coming offseason and season,” Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote Tuesday in answering fans’ questions. “No, the DeWitts are not close to being sold, and I guess we’ll have to keep repeating that over the next few months.”

Given Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.’s previous comments about what St. Louis fans expect from the organization, it’s hard to understand why Mozeliak would return in 2025, his final year of contract.

Mozeliak made some crucial mistakes during his tenure as POBO for St. Louis that cost the organization a lot of money. Examples of players traded away from St. Louis during his tenure include Marcell Ozuna, Randy Arozarena, Adolis Garcia, and Zac Gallen – just to name a few.

The last few years have not always been smooth sailing for Mozeliak, but hopefully he will end his career on a good note and successfully replenish the Cardinals roster in his final offseason as a POBO for St. Louis next winter.
