Flack Broadcasting – Planning to post first day of school or back to school photos on social media? Local sheriff’s office warns to think before sharing

It’s almost time for the children to go back to school; a sure sign that fall is just around the corner.

As families prepare to send their children and teens back to school, local officials are anticipating a wave of back-to-school photos being shared on numerous social media platforms across the state.

It’s become a common trend for families to share first day of school or back to school pictures on social media. And as exciting as it may be to document such a special occasion, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office warns to be very cautious about what information you share on social media.

“As you document your child’s first day of school with signs, remember to put safety first and be careful not to share too much information about your child on social media,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Regardless of your privacy settings or those of your friends, the Sheriff’s Office recommends keeping all personal information to a minimum.

Remove or block personal information to ensure your child’s safety (much of this information may also be part of the security questions):

  • Children’s class.
  • Age of the child.
  • Name/logo of the school.
  • Name of the teacher.
  • interests.
  • Avoid location tags.
  • graduating class.
  • School bus number.
  • Pictures of the front door/porch showing the house number.

On behalf of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Maciol wishes all local students a safe and successful 2024-2025 school year.
