The Broncos could give the Chiefs the perfect running back

The Broncos could give the Chiefs the perfect running back

Just like the Kansas City Chiefs, their rivals are desperately trying to trim their roster down to 53 players before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline. There will be many transactions in the next 24 hours that will result in interesting players becoming available. One of those players for the Chiefs could come from the Denver Broncos.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Broncos are likely to trade veteran running back Samaje Perine. The 28-year-old reportedly won’t be on Denver’s original 53-man roster, but the team is trying to decide on the nature of his departure. This presents an interesting opportunity for the Chiefs, who could use another runner in the rotation.

This is an unexpected development for Perine and the Broncos. It means he has lost the competition to Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime, which does not bode well for where Perine currently stands as a player.

At the same time, he could bring a different kind of playmaking to the Chiefs’ offense. Perine rushed for 238 yards on 53 attempts last year, but was also a major factor in the passing game, catching 50 passes for 455 yards. He was very effective on third downs as a pass catcher and pass blocker, and made many big plays in key two-minute drive situations. He totaled 37 first downs for Denver last year.

Reporting suggests the Broncos are looking at ways to trade Perine rather than release him before the roster reduction deadline. A potential trade between Kansas City and Denver may seem unlikely, but the Broncos would presumably accept an offer from the Chiefs if it was the best package. Whether the Chiefs go that route or start the season with the current RB room remains to be seen.
