Tonata Lolesio, principal of Sacred Hearts School, will be a speaker at the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset meeting on Tuesday, September 3. Lolesio will present information on “Sacred Hearts School – A Year of Unity, Strength of Faith and Hope Since the Lahaina Fires.”

Lolesio’s family immigrated from Tonga in 1982. She has lived her entire life in West Maui, attending public schools and graduating from Lahainaluna in 1994. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Lahaina and the Lahaina Land Trust and is currently the Maui County Commissioner for Children and Youth in West Maui. Lolesio is an active member of Maria Lanakila Catholic Parish and has taught at Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina, eventually becoming principal in the spring of 1995.

After her school was destroyed in the August 8, 2023 wildfires, she set up a temporary school at Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua, where a class of 2024 successfully graduated last May. The school has since been relocated to Kāʻanapali while awaiting reconstruction of the Lahaina school. She was recently awarded the prestigious Lead. Learn. Proclaim award by the National Catholic Education Association for her leadership skills, received the Gold Pineapple Award as Hawaii Catholic Schools Administrator of the Year, and was honored with a community service resolution by the Maui County Council at its June meeting.
