St. John’s mourns the loss of Maksym Kariuchenko

QUEENS, NY – The St. John’s fencing team, along with the entire athletic department and the university family, mourns the death of Maksym Karyuchenko.

“We extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to Maksym’s family and friends,” said the interim director of athletics John Diffley said. “Maksym was a high-class competitor and a valuable member of our university community and our athletics family. He will be truly missed.”

Kariuchenko, a four-year performer (2019-23) from Kharkiv, Ukraine, amassed 41 victories in men’s épée during his tenure. The 2024 St. John’s University graduate, who earned his bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, capped his junior season with a 14th-place finish in the NCAA Northeast Regional, making him one of four Johnnys in the top 15.

Kariuchenko also interned for the New Jersey courts, where he worked remotely on cybersecurity issues, among other things.

Before arriving in Queens, Kariuchenko secured first place at the 2017 U17 World Championship in Turkey. He also captained the Ukrainian national youth team from 2017 to 2019.
