Seven decoration ideas for your home for Chinese New Year

Seven decoration ideas for your home for Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is just around the corner (this year it falls on February 16) – so it’s time to add some festive flair to your Singapore home.

Think lanterns, cherry blossom branches, hanging ornaments and splashes of bright color.

However, old-fashioned, kitschy decorations often seem out of place in elegant, modern homes.

Style-conscious homeowners just need a little creativity to add a modern twist to holiday decor. Here are seven ideas to inspire creativity.

1. Flower wreath

This adorable creation is literally a leaf off the Christmas wreath and can be hung on your door to welcome guests. All you need is some artificial branches and flowers and wire fasteners.

These are available at flower or craft shops like Far East Flora. You can vary the size of the flowers for a balanced composition. Auspicious ornaments are optional.

2. Paper wind turbines

Instead of traditional wall hangings like lucky couples, firecrackers, and folding fans, decorate your walls with colorful paper pinwheels. For maximum impact, use them on a single accent wall. And remember to vary the size, color, design, and position of the pinwheels.

If you have a high ceiling, you can string them and hang them in a cluster above your dining table. Pinwheels are available at craft stores or online at Etsy. If you feel like making your own, there are online tutorials available.

3. Chinoiserie cushions

Bright cushion covers don’t really work on plain sofas and armchairs. A more elegant alternative is the Chinoiserie style, which is reminiscent of Chinese designs with its abstract patterns.

Meanwhile, American artist Paige Gemmel has created a hand-embroidered dog pattern just in time for the Year of the Dog. Only the gourd-shaped vase and the Chinese key motif on the vase identify it as Chinese. Available at Anthropologie.

4. Monochrome table decoration

Do you enjoy having guests and/or are you a Japan fan? How about a table decoration inspired by the land of the rising sun?

This setting works particularly well because it uses only two colors, namely red and white – the colors of the Japanese flag. Stick to a monochromatic scheme by combining white porcelain tableware with red napkins and red floral decorations.

For an extra touch of authenticity, decorate with Subscribe (traditional Japanese New Year decorations). Like Chinese culture, Japanese culture is full of symbolism. And thanks to cultural affinity, certain motifs have similar meanings. Cranes, for example, represent good luck and longevity in both cultures. Try Tokyu Hands or Takashimaya for Shime Kazari.

5. Cherry blossom decoration

Speaking of cultural affinity, cherry blossoms are valued in both Chinese and Japanese cultures. In fact, they are universal harbingers of spring.

And since today is the Spring Festival, what better way to usher in the season than with gorgeous cherry blossom bouquets.

Use a paper lantern as a vase for a unique look. Or use vases of different heights to create an informal, artistic table setting. Large flower wholesalers like Far East Flora carry cherry blossoms.

6. Lantern installation art

Instead of hanging your fairy lights, you can also display them in clear glass vases. For a stunning installation art-style arrangement, use several vases in a row. For example, place them along your driveway or hallway.

Choose energy-efficient LEDs to save electricity.

7. Hanging ornaments

Traditionally, the ornaments are hung from pussy willows or floral arrangements. Alternatively, you can hang them from a piece of driftwood or an ordinary but sculptural branch. This works well if your interior has a natural, rustic or resort-like design.

And if store-bought hanging decorations aren’t your thing, you can get creative and make your own mini lanterns like the ones pictured.
