OpEd: The development of the Viper Room is a fait accompli

OpEd: The development of the Viper Room is a fait accompli

What does “fait accompli” mean? It means that the matter is a done deal.

The proposed development at 8850 Sunset Boulevard will span 0.92 acres from San Vicente to Larrabee and the entire block of Sunset Boulevard. A final hearing on the project is scheduled for tonight in the City Council Chambers. The property was originally purchased six years ago, as reported here:

Many residents in the construction area, as well as those who live north of Sunset Boulevard, are outraged by the size and scope of the project. The project has already been presented to the City Council twice.

Today’s meeting is the third public meeting before the City Council. Due to the large amount of public comment expected, this is the only major business before the City Council tonight.

On one side is the London Hotel. The new building will be located just west of the London and will alter the view of many of its hotel rooms. The noise during demolition and construction will certainly affect the quiet enjoyment of the luxury hotel. Sensibility on Sunset, a campaign to save the Viper Room, was funded by the London Hotel, which appointed Afriat Consulting Group to represent its interests.

On the other side is Silvercreek Development, which has partnered with UNITE HERE Local 11 to push this project forward. Lobbyist Jeff Seymour represents the developer. Looking at the campaign support and donations so far, it seems likely that the three votes will push this project through. Erickson, Byers and Shyne will all vote yes.

Meister will try to criticize the project, but will not get very far. Heilman will nuance the project’s history, but will ultimately join his colleagues and vote with the developer on the final approval.
