Hunter Thomas uses birthday wish to collect Legos for Cook Children’s Hospital

Hunter Thomas is a teenager with complex medical issues who, despite his problems, wants to give back in a special way for his birthday.

“We were at the Cook Children’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, which we visit regularly to see if they detect seizures, if there is new activity. So we were there for 48 hours and they have the Child Life Program, which is a huge blessing for the children and their families,” said Jamie Thomas, Hunter’s mother.

Thomas said the idea came to them when hospital staff asked Hunter and his family if they could get him anything during his stay, and he said Legos.

“I wonder where they come from, how they get them, so I came up with the idea,” Thomas said. “He and I were talking about it in the car on Thursday night, driving home from Cook. That’s when I came up with the idea: ‘My birthday is coming up, I like Legos, they need Legos. I have loads of Legos. Let’s see if people will donate Legos to the hospital.'”

Hunter doesn’t just use Legos for entertainment.

“He can’t really write well or draw or, you know, use pencils and stuff, but he can put together Lego sets,” Thomas said. “Not just the big DUPLOs, but the really smaller bricks. And now that he’s developed a trimmer, we were worried that it might take the joy out of it for him, but it actually helps him stay focused and … be able to work on keeping his hand steady so he can build.”

Hunter said he wants everyone to donate so he can grow the stack and see how big it can get. So far, Hunter has received 60 donations, but would like more.

If you would like to donate, you can do so by going to Hunter’s Facebook page and finding the Amazon wishlist there.
