“La Bamba” remake tells new story by Ritchie Valens

Lou Diamond Phillips played the rock pioneer in the 1987 original; an update is currently in development

The musical from 1987 biography La Bamba Chronicle of the life and career of Mexican-American rock pioneer Ritchie Valens. Well, according to diversitya remake of the film is in the works.

Lou Diamond Phillips played Valens in the original, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and gave Los Lobos a chart-topper in 1987 for their version of Valens’ 1958 single “La Bamba,” based on a Mexican folk song. Valens was also known for the ballad “Donna” and the rave hit “Come On, Let’s Go,” two radio hits of the late ’50s.

Valens died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, at the age of 17. Buddy Holly and Jiles Perry Richardson, aka “The Big Bopper,” also died in the crash in a cornfield in Iowa. Don McLean mythologized the tragedy, known as “The Day the Music Died,” in his 1971 opus “American Pie.”

Accordingly diversityMucho Mas Media and Sony Pictures will develop the remake of Valens’ life story. Luis Valdez, who wrote and directed the 1987 film, will serve as executive producer.

Together with La BambaIn addition to the Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama, “La Bamba” by Los Lobos was also nominated for a Grammy for Record of the Year.
