CASPER, Wyoming – Chrissy Golen, principal of Crest Hill Elementary School, held a megaphone shortly after the morning bell rang to break through the din of students’ voices and laughter.

“Who’s ready for school?” she called out excitedly. She was met with excited cheers and yells, and a few audible “booooos” as well. Despite the occasional inconsistency, the vast majority of elementary school students seemed ready for the new year.

Friends reuniting after the long summer break hugged, high-fived and compared new clothes, accessories and hairstyles. The same goes for students and staff who also worked to ease the nervousness of new students or new arrivals.

A long purple carpet, the school’s official color, was laid out in front of the building’s door. It’s customary for students to line up at the end of the school year and say goodbye to fifth-graders, but this year, Chrissy said, they decided to welcome the kindergarteners to the building in the same way.

After countless high fives and fist bumps – and a lot of noise – the rest of the student body entered the building to begin the new school year.
