Pleasant Prairie 1993 John Doe investigation; new information is revealed

The Pleasant Prairie Police Department and the Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s Office will hold a joint press conference on Tuesday morning, August 27, to announce new information regarding the investigation into the 1993 John Doe murder case.

Police had previously released photos after a male victim was found dead near the Soo Line tracks on the west side of Pleasant Prairie on August 27, 1993. His body was discovered by a photographer walking in the area and was in an advanced stage of decomposition, police said.

Kenosha County police and the coroner arrived at the scene to begin the investigation.

According to a police press release, an autopsy, a forensic anthropological examination, a forensic dental examination and the reconstruction of the deceased’s tattoo were initially carried out. None of the work carried out provided the identity of the victim or provided further clues to the case.

Police said that during a meeting in December 2014, the Kenosha County Coroner’s Office and police decided to send John Doe’s skull to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification on behalf of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System for a second forensic anthropological examination, a forensic odontological examination and DNA extraction.

In June 2016, officials at the University of North Texas notified the medical examiner that tests conducted by the forensic anthropologist showed that the 1993 John Doe was a male between approximately 40 and 60 years of age and may have been of Hispanic, Native American, or Caucasian descent, or possibly a combination of those ancestry. The results of the DNA analysis were then uploaded to CODIS, the FBI’s national database.

In September 2016, the medical examiner requested that the Michigan State Police Biometrics and Identification Division perform facial reconstruction on John Doe in the hopes that it would assist in identifying the deceased.

In connection with this investigation, officials released the photos published in this post โ€“ including a shoe (Giorgio Brutini, size 12), the reconstruction of a tattoo on the victim’s left forearm, and images of a facial reconstruction.
