Meteorologists: Strong thunderstorms, winds and flooding possible on Long Island

Long Island is expected to experience warm temperatures through Monday night and the possibility of severe thunderstorms, which could bring strong winds and a slight risk of flooding.

There is about a 30% chance of storms for most of the island, according to the National Weather Service, with some severe storms possible after 2 p.m. and into Monday evening. Meteorologists said the storms could dump about an inch of rain per hour in places.

Meteorologists warned that the heavy rains could cause flooding in areas with poor drainage. There is a possibility of isolated flash floods, particularly in eastern Long Island and southern Connecticut.

The storms could intensify further Monday evening, with the possibility of damaging winds and hail. The forecast calls for a slight risk of severe storms for most of Long Island, including areas in Suffolk County, which were recently hit by flash flooding that prompted President Joe Biden and Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare states of emergency due to storm damage.

The forecast calls for highs of around 27 degrees Celsius, but high humidity could make temperatures feel warm, especially in Nassau County and northern Suffolk County, meteorologists say.
