Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s cross-series Olgrun saga has shaken up DC history on a grand scale, with cosmic implications for both Green Lantern And Superman equally. As more and more fragments of the dead god seep into DC continuity, a conflict between these two titans seems increasingly inevitable.

In Green Lantern: War Diary #12 – the final issue of Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Montos’ monumental John Stewart series – John faces his arch-nemesis, the Revenant Queen. Here, the Queen drops a bombshell and claims that John Stewart was chosen as Olgrun’s reincarnation since time immemorial.

According to Olgrun lore, the mad god was split into seven different parts to prevent him from destroying all of existence. Green Lantern: War Diary #12 culminates in John Stewart gains control of Olgrun’s ring and thus command of all of Olgrun’s armed forces.However, the first aspect of Olgrun (the fire of Olgrun) was given to Superman’s adopted son Osul-Ra, in Superman: Warworld Apocalypse #1. The fire of Olgrun, also in the form of a sword, is a source of incredible power, making Osul-Ra one of the most dangerous beings in the multiverse – guarded by Superman himself.

A clash between these two heirs of Olgrun would be devastating. John Stewart has already achieved functional godhood since Green Lantern #12 and is one of the most capable Green Lanterns to ever exist. Superman’s powers are also unmatched since his absorption of Genesis energy at the end of. Warworld Sagawho once admitted to Lex Luthor that “Concepts like weight, distance, temperature, and even space-time have largely lost their meaning for me.A battle between John Stewart and Superman would represent a power struggle of a magnitude that normally only occurs in crises.

Superman vs. Green Lantern would be a battle of multiversal proportions

Olgrun's corrupt aspect tries to take possession of John Stewart.


Two of Olgrun’s aspects have entered DC continuity, but crucially, if John Stewart is Olgrun’s chosen vessel, Stewart must either collect those aspects or they must come to him for Olgrun to be whole. This means that for Olgrun to be whole, John Stewart would have to claim the Fire of Olgrun from Osul-Ra, something Superman would never allow. Yet as Olgrun’s broken pieces continue to reveal themselves, the return of the Mad God feels slow but inevitable – and with it the ultimate battle between Green Lantern And Superman.
