TrakkaBeam lights the way for Fairfax County Police

TrakkaBeam lights the way for Fairfax County Police

An important partnership has existed in Northern Virginia for 12 years.

The Fairfax County Police Department Helicopter Division holds a special place in Trakka Systems’ history as it was their very first U.S. customer.

The initial investment in a TrakkaBeam A800 searchlight system in 2012 proved a successful collaboration and recently the department upgraded its two Bell 429 helicopters, Fairfax 1 and Fairfax 2, to the latest TrakkaBeam Xenon TLX high intensity models.

The Fairfax County Police Helicopter Division plays a vital role for the region’s 1.2 million residents. Covering a vast 400-square-mile area, its helicopters provide critical air support for a wide range of missions, including search and rescue, medical evacuations (medevacs), and assisting ground units in the apprehension of suspects.

A legacy of enlightenment

For over 12 years, the TrakkaBeam searchlight system has been an integral part of its success. The Model A800, Trakka’s world-leading military-grade high-performance searchlight with an aerodynamic design, has served the department faithfully.

Now the updated TLX models offer even more advanced features:

  • Superior beam profile: The specially designed optics deliver an efficient and uniform beam, preventing the “black hole” effect of competing systems and ensuring consistent target visibility.
  • Multi-mission functionality: The TrakkaBeam features a unique in-flight multi-filter system that allows officers to instantly switch between different filters depending on the situation, from covert infrared (visible with night vision devices) to ultraviolet, amber, red or blue light.
  • Durability and reliability: The TrakkaBeam system is rigorously tested to ensure peak performance and withstand harsh weather conditions. Its efficient design minimizes maintenance requirements and has the highest proven mean time between failures (MTBF) in the industry.

A team effort: Beyond the Beam

The TrakkaBeam system is just one component of the comprehensive aerial toolkit of the Fairfax County Police Department’s Tactical Flight Officers (TFO). These highly trained officers form the backbone of the helicopter unit and are responsible for piloting the aircraft, operating on-board equipment, and coordinating with ground units during missions. Their skill and experience are critical to the success of each mission.

Eyes in the sky: A multi-faceted approach

In addition to the TrakkaBeam searchlight, the TFOs use gyro-stabilized EO/IR sensors that provide them with a powerful combination of visible and infrared imagery. This allows them to see through darkness, smoke and other interference, making them even better at gathering important information during missions.

At the same time, the use of modern mission mapping systems provides real-time geographic information, enabling soldiers to navigate complex environments, track moving targets and seamlessly share important data with ground units.

The combined capabilities of these technologies enable a versatile approach to air operations, enabling TFOs to make informed decisions and respond to situations with exceptional efficiency.

A successful partnership continues

The Fairfax County Police Department’s continued commitment to innovation and recent upgrade to the latest TrakkaBeam technology solidifies a remarkable partnership. This collaboration ensures that the experienced responders and entire helicopter division remain on the front lines of aerial law enforcement. With this advanced technology, the department can continue to provide a watchful eye and critical support to the safety and well-being of Fairfax County’s 1.2 million residents.
