How the Ducks are preparing for life in the Big Ten

The Oregon football team is looking forward to the challenge of competing in a new league this fall.

Joining the Ducks in the Big Ten are Washington, USC and UCLA, which has added the iconic “Maps” commercial to the conference that airs on television during its sporting events throughout the year.

Although Oregon is one of the newcomers on the block, the Ducks have several players on their team who have already played in the Big Ten, including offensive lineman Matthew Bedford, defensive lineman Derrick Harmon and inside linebacker Jestin Jacobs.

When asked about the possible differences in playing in the Big Ten, the three players expressed the following common opinion: “Football is football.”

“We have some guys on the defensive line,” said Harmon, who transferred from Michigan State. “We have the guys that can compete in the Big Ten. This defense can compete in the Big Ten, for sure. I know they’re going to run the ball in this conference. That’s what they want to do. We’ve got to try to stop the run, that’s going to be our main focus.”

Lanning and Oregon players also announced their intentions for the upcoming season. The Ducks don’t just want to move to the new conference. They want to win it.

“The great thing about college football is you still have to play games,” Lanning said. “It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. The only people who really affect that are the players and coaches. That’s what we focus on. How can we control our destiny? You do that by focusing on what’s right in front of you, not what’s far on the horizon.”

Latest Oregon Football Injury Update

The Oregon football team was missing at least one scheduled starter when the Ducks returned to Autzen Stadium for their second scrimmage of fall camp on August 17.

Offensive lineman Matthew Bedford, who suffered a knee injury at the start of training camp, will be out indefinitely.

“He’s out of action for a while,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said Saturday. “I think that will be determined by his recovery and how that goes, and we’re not going to be selfish and try to rush him back to get him here tomorrow. I don’t think that’s realistic. Will he be able to play for us this year? Yes, absolutely.”

Lanning also provided updates on reserve offseason lineman Dave Iuli (foot) and cornerback Jahlil Florence (knee), both of whom are still recovering from offseason surgeries.

“He’s closer,” Lanning said of Iuli. “He hasn’t been fully there yet, so we’ll see if we can get him there before the season starts.”

Florence, who started nine games last season before being injured against Arizona State in November, is also making progress.

“He’s not ready yet,” Lanning said. “We’re still not letting him get that far. He’s going to continue to aggressively rehab and get him in a position to play for us, but right now he’s not available.”

Oregon will wear new uniforms in 2024

The Ducks will debut their new “Generation O” uniforms in the Big Ten Conference next season. The team’s first combination is called the “Fly Era” and is predominantly black and white with green trim.

The Ducks’ second set of “Generation O” uniforms is all green and pays homage to the “Gang Green” Oregon Ducks of the mid-1990s.

Another look that honors tradition is the team’s third uniform, the “Mighty Oregon” combination. It is the first “Generation O” uniform to feature a white jersey. The look is inspired by the jerseys the Ducks wore in 1997 when Washington’s Pat Johnson made “The Catch” in Seattle.
