Grealish sends birthday wishes to 106-year-old fan

Manchester City football star Jack Grealish has sent a special birthday present to one of his team’s oldest fans.

Mary Spires celebrated the milestone on Sunday and received a signed Manchester City shirt and a video message from the midfielder.

BBC Radio Manchester contacted the city after Mary’s home at Bowerfield Court Care in Stockport appealed for people to send cards for the birthday girl.

To celebrate Mary’s big day, over 300 cards have now been sent out.

Mary, who listens to every City game on the radio, said her love for the team began when her family introduced her to the team.

“Oh, my family loves Manchester City and I join them,” she said.

“I hope to meet some of the players, shake their hands and play a bit of football with them.”

She said she felt “like a celebrity” after receiving so many tickets.

“I think I have a whole mailbox downstairs,” she said.

“I always say, ‘I’m famous, get me out of here!'”

Genesi Carroll, the nursing home’s lifestyle coordinator, said they never expected such a huge response. “I initially expected 80 or 90 cards. I thought it would be difficult, so it was incredible that so many arrived,” she added.
