Men’s soccer draws in St. John’s

QUEENS, NY – The Stony Brook men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw away at St. John’s on Sunday night. Jonas Bickus scored the equaliser, his first of the season, in the 13th minute.th Minute, as the score would hold and the Seawolves would start the young season with a 0-1-1 start.



HOW IT HAPPENED

The Red Storm opened their scoring in the sixth minute when Miguel Diaz took advantage of an open sideline to break into the attacking zone and fire a high shot into the top right corner of the net. Stony Brook tied it with a goal from Bickus. Lorenzo Selini collected the ball which bounced off a defender’s leg, then dribbled along the top of the box and found Bickus who was unmarked at the top of the box and he shot, levelling the score.

The rest of the first half remained goalless. In the last 45 minutes, neither team was able to take advantage, but there were still many opportunities to score the opening goal. Particularly notable was a shot from Olsen Aluminium who crossed into the penalty area for Trevor Harrison with a possible header in the last minute of regular time.

Stony Brook only had nine shots on goal in the game, of which only two were on target during the course of the evening.

STATISTICS AND NOTES

  • Bickus, who was named to the All-CAA selection in the preseason and was on the USC Forwards Watch List, scored his first goal of the 2024 season.
  • Selini provided an assist, his first of the season.
  • Sandy Rushon recorded four saves for the Seawolves.
  • St. John’s finished with a 16-9 shot advantage, with five on goal and Stony Brooks two.
  • The Seawolves have finished their last three meetings with the Red Storm with 0-1-2.

“I am proud of our team’s performance tonight against St. John’s,” said head coach Anatol, Ryan after the game. “They are a tough opponent with very dangerous attacking players and I thought we were defensively solid and determined throughout the game. We got ourselves into a strong position towards the end of the game and created some good chances but unfortunately we couldn’t score the winning goal. Overall I really liked the response to our game on Thursday and I’m happy with the improvements we made. I’m looking forward to continuing to make progress.”
