  • GBAPSD school district starts a week early to give students time off for the NFL draft
  • For some families, the early start is welcome

At a fundraiser hosted by the Green Bay Area Public Schools Education Foundation on Sunday, August 25, families looked forward to the first day of school.

“My kids are so excited to go back. They’ve already picked out their outfits, shoes and everything,” said Liz Kanzleiter, a board member of the education foundation and a mother in the school district.

The Education Foundation held a meat raffle at Tic’s Harber Lights in Suamico to raise money and awareness for its fall fundraiser, “Dancing with the Stars.”

“Being able to do this on the first day of school is very fitting,” said Eric Vanden Heuvel, chairman of the educational foundation.

The money raised will be used to fund GBAPSD projects.

“To provide students with opportunities that are not available to them with their normal operating budget,” said Vanden Heuvel.

Many of those involved in the foundation are local parents who were excited to use the fundraiser to kick off a successful and early 2024-25 school year in Green Bay.

“It is never too early to raise funds and never too early to help the school and all the children in the district,” said Kanzleiter.

Kanzleiter said her children have not been bothered by the early start to school so far.

“I think they’re looking forward to two spring breaks,” she said.

By starting Monday, Green Bay Packers families can take a break for the NFL Draft in April – a decision that Vanden Heuvel welcomed with joy across the district.

“I think it’s great. The Green Bay School District is always looking for ways to evolve and innovate. This year we’re doing something new with the NFL Draft in April. Through Dancing with our Stars we’re really finding ways to raise money to support the mission of the school district,” he said.

Because of the conscription, students will have a day off school from April 23 to 25.
