Liverpool gets green light for million defender in Bundesliga

Liverpool’s position as the only Premier League team not to have completed a summer transfer is set to change in the next few days.

With the EPL transfer window closing on August 30, Arne Slot is working on several deals and is expected to add at least one reinforcement before the deadline.

Defence is a key area that Slot will want to cover following the departure of Joel Matip in the summer, with England international Joe Gomez potentially set to leave the club later this month.

Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Piero Hincapie has long been a target for Liverpool, from Jürgen Klopp to Slot, and rumours suggest the Ecuadorian is open to a move to Merseyside.

Hincapie only made 16 league appearances last season as Xabi Alonso led Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, with his first-choice defensive duo Jonathan Tah and Edmond Tapsoba.

Newcastle United’s interest in Tapsoba has complicated Hincapie’s potential exit as the Magpies grow increasingly frustrated in their bid to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

According to reports from Liverpool.com, Liverpool are willing to pay Leverkusen’s £50 million ($66 million) transfer fee to beat out interest from rivals Tottenham.

Alonso will not want to lose both Tapsoba and Hincapie, but if Liverpool act quickly they can secure a key target as part of their future plans to replace club icon Virgil van Dijk.
