Remembering Nari Hira: A titan of print media and a valued family man

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nari Hira, an outstanding pioneer of the print media industry. Hira was known for his profound influence on Indian publishing and his role as a devoted family man. His passing leaves a void that is deeply regretted by all who knew him.

Nari Hira was the founder and owner of Magna Publishing Co. Ltd., a major Mumbai-based publishing house known for its influential magazines. Under his leadership, Magna Publishing became synonymous with leading titles such as Stardust, Savvy, Showtime, Society and Health. These publications not only shaped the Indian media landscape but also set standards for journalistic excellence and creativity.

Hira’s career began in the advertising industry, where he honed his skills before venturing into the world of publishing. His move into the print media sector marked the beginning of a new era for Indian magazines. The launch of Stardust in 1971 was a significant milestone and marked its first and arguably greatest success. The magazine quickly became a cultural phenomenon, capturing the glamour and allure of Bollywood and establishing Hira as a leading figure in the media.

In addition to his success as a publisher, Nari Hira also made his mark in the film industry through Magna Films, a subsidiary of his publishing company. His foray into film production proved his versatility and vision and contributed to the diversity of Indian cinema.

Beyond his professional achievements, Nari Hira was greatly loved by his family. His loved ones – Vikram, Proneeta and Aryan – described him as a “family man and father beyond compare” – his personal life was as outstanding as his professional career. His death is heartbreaking to his family and reflects the deep personal loss that comes with the passing of such a loved one.

Nari Hira’s legacy is one of innovation, dedication and profound influence on the media industry and his family. As we remember his service and mourn his loss, we celebrate a life marked by significant achievements and deep personal connections. We will miss his presence greatly, but his contributions to print and film will continue to inspire future generations.
