Cleveland Browns vs. Green Bay Packers Instant Analysis: Live Updates from Preseason Debut

CLEVELAND — The Browns’ crucial opening game is still nearly a month away, but Saturday’s preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers still has some significance, at least as much as a home opener can.

Both teams expect to use their starters for at least a few series, depending on how the game goes. Although Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Jameis Winston, not Deshaun Watson, would start at quarterback, the Packers will likely use Jordan Love.

The results of today’s 4:25 p.m. game will not ultimately be decisive, but they should at least provide a basis for evaluating the two most important preseason dates next week – the joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday and Thursday.

Follow this afternoon and evening as the Browns begin their preseason schedule:

Cleveland Browns win the 1st coin toss of the preseason

The Browns won the coin toss and deferred their decision to the second half. The Packers will open the game and must defend the Dawg Pound side of the stadium to begin with.

Rex Sunahara takes over the long-snapping duties for the Cleveland Browns

The Browns will have a new long snapper against the Green Bay Packers, albeit for a short time. Charley Hughlett, who hasn’t missed a regular season or playoff game for the team since 2015, was “a little banged up” this week and will not play against the Packers.

Bay Village native and West Virginia University transfer Rex Sunahara was signed Thursday and will handle long snapping for at least Saturday’s game. He was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and has spent time on the practice squads in Miami and Pittsburgh.

Cleveland Browns announce long list of players who will not play against the Packers

The following Browns players will not play against the Packers:

Cleveland Browns announce QB rotation after Jameis Winston

The Browns will use Jameis Winston as quarterback instead of Deshaun Watson, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Tuesday.

Stefanski, however, had not announced how the quarterbacks would play after Winston’s departure, which they finally did about two hours before kickoff.

Here is the Browns quarterback order against the Packers:

  • James Winston

  • Tyler Huntley

  • Dorian Thompson Robinson
