Hone Update Saturday: Tropical Storm Remains on Track to Pass Big Island tonight; Strengthening Expected: Kauai Now

Hone remains a strong tropical storm as it continues to move west toward the Big Island.

Currently 260 miles southeast of Hilo and about 470 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, the storm remains on track to pass near or south of the Big Island tonight and into the early hours of Sunday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 a.m. report.

Maximum sustained winds will be 65 mph with stronger gusts. Some strengthening is expected over the next 48 hours, and Hone is forecast to be a hurricane southwest of the Big Island Sunday into Monday.

Hone is moving at 15 mph and is expected to continue at this speed over the next few days with a gradual decrease in forward speed.

Tropical storm force winds extend up to 185 kilometers from the center.

Tropical storm conditions are expected on the Big Island beginning as early as this evening and lasting through early Sunday. Winds are expected to be strongest on higher elevations, over headlands and through passes.

Hone is expected to bring total rainfall of 5 to 10 inches over the primarily windward and southeast facing slopes of the Big Island, with higher amounts possible in some locations.

Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 centimetres are possible over parts of the smaller islands, especially in the windward areas.

The surf combined with the large waves generated by Hone will rapidly intensify today through Sunday as Hone continues to move westward. Expect dangerous conditions with life-threatening surf and current conditions.
