The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power While Season 1 revealed a lot about the origins of Mordor, much of Sauron’s own backstory was left untold. Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, Season 1 of Prime Video’s hit fantasy series finds the future Dark Lord of Middle-earth on the run for centuries following the defeat of his original master, the Dark Lord Morgoth. Hiding in plain sight as Charlie Vickers’ Half-Rand, Morgoth’s traitorous lieutenant was able to deceive everyone around him, including Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel.

He explained that while they had intended to introduce more details about Sauron, it was decided that The story would benefit more if this information was withheld until the second season. Instead, The Rings of Power Season 1 started with Galadriel’s backstory, and so Season 2 will now start with Sauron’s. Check out his comments below:
Yes, at some point we were going to put some of that material into Season 1, but we felt that the story would benefit even more if we saved it for the beginning of Season 2. So yes, we knew that backstory and we always had a plan for the general, high-level development of the characters and storylines. But one of the first ideas in terms of scene work and the kind of rhythm and rhythm of the Season 2 part was that we would start with Sauron’s origin story within the series, just as Season 1 starts with Galadriel’s origin story within the series.
So yeah, pretty early. I’d say we’ve been working on it for four years now. For this particular season, we started writing in the middle of the pandemic, when we were still working on season 1. So far away.

While most viewers probably best know Sauron as the all-seeing, lidless eye of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The Rings of Power Season 1 was able to shed light on his time in physical form before he rose to become the second Dark Lord of Middle Earth. But long before the start of the Second Age, the being who would eventually become Sauron once lived a blessed life as the angel spirit MaironHowever, Mairon eventually came under the influence of Morgoth, the first Dark Lord of Middle-earth.
Since Sauron’s cruel nature was largely shaped by his former master, it’s likely that any backstory will also revolve around Morgoth’s fearsome reign.
As fallen Valar, the godlike beings from Tolkien’s lore, Morgoth’s fearsome power dwarfed even that of his deputy and later successors. His name literally means “Dark Enemy” or “Black Enemy”. Morgoth was the original source of Middle-earth’s suffering and the one who gave form to many ancient terrors that endured until the time of Frodo and his quest for Mount Doom. Since Sauron’s cruel nature was largely shaped by his former master, it’s likely that any backstory will revolve around Morgoth’s fearsome reign as well.
With The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 will now reveal Sauron’s more complete backstory, and viewers will also likely learn a lot about the god-like being that first twisted and corrupted him. If audiences believe Sauron to be Middle Earth’s ultimate evil, delving into his own dark past will quickly reveal a being far more powerful and malevolent than even he could ever dream of.
