In the trailer, Luke Skywalker appears as a typical beach buddy living his best life. He has a podracer that he often uses to race against others in an aquatic environment. He then cuts to a cantina full of characters as Sig and Jedi Bob try to find the former Jedi. As they do, Luke tries to understand his story before everything changes, but he doesn’t like it.

So, let me see if I got this right. In your galaxy, my father is mostly evil until he turns good for like 5 minutes and then dies. My own nephew cheats on me and kills most of my best friends, and I spend decades alone until I use the Force so much that it kills me?

In a monotone voice, Luke tells his story, which is hilarious. In this universe, beach bro Luke is very happy with his current situation and doesn’t seem interested in changing his fate. Although he is shocked by the story, later in the trailer we see that Luke has joined their cause with his podracer. How Sig and Bob convinced Luke to help won’t be revealed until the series is released, but this scene in the trailer once again shows how sad Luke’s story has become.

The sequel trilogy was not kind to Luke Skywalker, and this meta-joke in the Rebuild the galaxy Trailer has brought this topic back into the spotlight. After his failure as master of his nephew and the destruction of his Jedi Academy on Ossus, Luke shut himself off from the galaxy and severed his connection to the Force. However, this did not help prevent the deaths of Han and Leia, or his own. In a final demonstration of his power, Luke projects a projection of himself to fight Kylo Ren across the galaxy, costing him his life.

This tragedy is a testament to how badly Disney’s Luke Skywalker story missed the mark. Unlike his father Anakin, Luke Skywalker’s tragedy was met with almost universal disdain. Luke’s depression was compounded by his failures, which compounded and led to his isolation and eventual death. The sadness of his character is as tragic as the story arc itselfwhich led many to argue that Disney did not do this great character a fair service in the sequel trilogy.

Mark Hamill has stated that Disney no longer needs Luke Skywalker.
