Most customers blindly trust that their local grocer follows safety protocols to keep their production areas sparkling clean, but two lucky Costco customers were able to get a behind-the-scenes look at what actually happens during a thorough cleaning.
In a TikTok with over a million views, Amy (@amybalsam0) shot a clip through the window of an employee door to the meat room. The room was covered from top to bottom with white foam – presumably disinfectant – and was hosed down by a worker. The disinfectant flowed into a slot in the floor.
“I’m very impressed,” Amy said in the clip. “I would love to clean my kitchen like that.”
Viewers appreciate the meat room protocol
Viewers were equally shocked by the thoroughness of Costco’s cleaning protocol and discussed the clip in the comments.
“This is why I’m going to start shopping at Costco now,” said one commenter.
“This is why I love Costco meat!!! Always clean,” wrote another.
Other commenters who said they work at Costco emphasized that the warehouse has extremely strict cleanliness standards and revealed that the meat room is thoroughly cleaned every day.
“I used to work at Costco and they are really strict about cleanliness and everything is constantly checked. It’s really impressive,” wrote one.
“Costco is insanely clean. Even the vents needed cleaning,” said another.
“I worked at Costco and I can promise you this is true. Very, very, very strict,” added a third.
Other retailers practice daily deep cleaning
According to viewers, Costco isn’t the only retailer that does deep cleaning every day.
“The kitchen at Whole Foods is also spotless!” one person noted.
“We did this every night in the deli section at Publix,” said a second.
But grocery stores don’t have much choice in the matter. Grocery store cleaning regulations vary slightly from state to state, but standard protocol typically includes nightly disinfection of food preparation areas. According to Building Services Inc., failure to follow these protocols can cause the store to fail inspection.
