A bustling part of South India, Chennai is known as a city full of vibrant art, ancient temples, rich heritage and natural wonders. “Madras to me is the sound of the sea, your neighbour’s morning mantras, the scent of jasmine and someone lighting a lamp while the smell of camphor wafts through the air; all these elements bring with them a kind of experiential craft, which is interior design and architecture,” says Gowri Adappa, who fondly remembers her hometown. As the chief architect at A Designs Co., her work blends vintage with contemporary design, using antique pieces to add a touch of nostalgia to her projects.

In the latest episode of Artize Artboard’s second season, Adappa takes us into her world where vintage artworks from across India add unique character to her studio. “When my clients walk into a room and see a terrazzo floor or a cut cement wall, it evokes a kind of nostalgia and takes them back to a time they remember, and seeing that reaction is everything,” she recalls.

Vintage artworks unite contemporary spaces

Adappa’s work is inspired by South Asian aesthetics and a testament to how the beauty of dichotomies informs her architectural expression. Her hometown of Chennai has always been the centre of her projects, including her own workspace. Cracked mosaic floors, wooden rafters and a Madras terrace roof complement her workspace where her artistic vision comes to life.

No matter which part of the world you live in, Adappa brings a piece of Chennai into your home with A Design Co. In her projects, including a courtyard house in Colombo and a townhouse in London, you can see memories of this city through colors, textures and artwork.

“Three elements that make a space luxurious for me are good craftsmanship, lighting and good art. It looks curated and gives your space a layered impact,” says Gauri Adappa about designing spaces that reflect opulence with elements that celebrate India’s rich heritage.
