Currently for $230 at Heritage Art Auctions, this unidentified work of art is being sold by I’m Colleen Doran. Listed as “Colleen Doran – Beautiful Illustration Original Art (undated). The details and shading of this piece, coupled with the intense eyes that draw you in, perfectly illustrate why Colleen Doran is a masterful artist. She has many fans through her long-running self-published A Distant Soil, her work on DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes, and the VERTIGO Sandman series. Created in pure graphite on bright white 11″ x 17″ illustration board. It is personalized and signed in the lower border. In excellent condition.”
In her Substack newsletter, Colleen Doran points out that this could be a bargain for a collector with a certain bent. “Someone didn’t know what they were offering at Heritage Auctions, so no one spotted this splash page image of Neil Gaiman’s TROLL BRIDGE, and if that’s the case, you could get it at a bargain price. I’m not the seller.” And on the preview of the Troll Bridge Graphic novel published by Dark Horse Comics in 2016. You can see that this is actually the opening splash page.
And as for this illustration, also currently up for auction for $52: “Colleen Doran – Sandman Illustration Original Art (ca. 2019). A mysterious Sandman-related illustration by award-winning artist Colleen Doran. The artwork is a rather disturbing image of Despair holding a mirror, possibly with Delirium and another unidentified figure, rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image size of 8 x 8 inches. Signed by Doran and in excellent condition.”
Colleen Doran reveals that it’s “an illustration I did for the SANDMAN audiobook ad for Instagram and Audible. Despair. The Audible ad was interesting because fans were asked to send in their dreams/nightmares for the artists to draw, and this was one of several interpretations I – along with many other artists – did for the project.” If anyone is interested, they have a few more days to make their interest clear… in a very financial way. Heritage Auctions sponsors Bleeding Cool, but had no input into this article and did not know about it.
