Man may not survive after eating suspected contaminated Boar’s Head deli meat, lawsuit says

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (WBRC/Gray News) – An Alabama woman has filed a lawsuit on behalf of her son, who is currently hospitalized for allegedly eating Boar’s Head deli meat contaminated with listeria.

According to the complaint, a man purchased Boar’s Head Bologna at a grocery store in late July.

Shortly after eating the food, he was hospitalized with fever, headache, nausea and other related symptoms, WBRC reported.

According to the complaint, his condition worsened, one side of his face began to droop and he developed such difficulty breathing that he had to be put on a ventilator.

He was transferred to another hospital and a lumbar puncture was performed around August 7, which confirmed the presence of the deadly food-borne pathogen in his body.

The man is in such a condition that he can no longer communicate, “and it is currently unclear whether he will survive,” the lawsuit states.

The first recall, by Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc., occurred on July 26 after a sample of its liver sausage tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes in Maryland. The company recalled all liver sausage products and sausages made on the same production line, including mortadella.

On July 31, the recall was expanded to include 71 products. In total, over 3.2 million kilograms of deli meat and poultry products were removed from the shelves.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it takes three to four weeks to determine whether a sick person is part of an outbreak.

The Alabama Department of Public Health told WBRC that it cannot confirm any Listeria infection in Alabama associated with this outbreak at this time and cannot comment on individual infections due to privacy concerns.
