The extra space in an upstairs loft allows homeowners to make their home warmer and cozier for reading, studying, or relaxing. However, this space often lacks privacy from the people downstairs. Luckily, HGTV’s Joanna Gaines, co-host of “Fixer Upper,” has come up with a solution. After completing the impressive renovation of her lake house, Gaines posted a video to Instagram to discuss a detail that was left out of the unveiling: custom wood shades (via Instagram). “I love these shades, how simple they are—but detailed, very detailed,” she said in the video, adding, “…I love that little landing, I think it turned out so well.”

The wooden shades were created in a tight grid pattern and hung vertically from floor to ceiling (with small gaps between both surfaces). In this room, designed with a lichen green sofa, two wooden side tables, and a red Moroccan rug, the shades replaced the old-fashioned pony wall and brought a new sense of interest and structure. If you want to achieve this look, there are several ways to do it.

How to achieve the look

If you like the custom wood panel look, you’ll need to hire a carpenter to build the panel for you. Minus the cost of materials, a carpenter will likely charge $75 to $125 per hour, depending on their skill level and what they’re making. For the cost of materials, you’ll likely pay $2 to $9 per square foot.

If you want to avoid that cost, you can buy something ready-made, like All Modern’s Poul 72-by-72-inch Solid Wood Single Panel Room Divider for $380. The dark wood color and lattice pattern are similar to what Joanna Gaines unveiled when renovating her lake house and are sure to add a touch of privacy to your loft space. Those who prefer something even more affordable can instead opt for a folding room divider, like Amazon’s HomCom Six Panel Folding Privacy Screen, which measures about 67 inches tall and 94 inches wide. It costs about $95 and features a woven design that’s perfect for a bohemian decor. If you like to get hands-on, you can also build your own screens by creating a room divider out of IKEA outdoor patio tiles and mounting it between the floor and ceiling.
