Malaysian publisher of “Doraemon” comics ends 24th anniversary

In Malaysia, most of us, regardless of our race, grew up reading localized versions of the Doraemon comics.

Apart from school, Doraemon is probably the only comic in Malaysia that taught us Bahasa Malaysia in our early childhood, and even though the BM translations weren’t that great, the comics at least had an educational quality.

It was recently announced that Tora Aman, the local publisher of popular comics such as “Doraemon” and “Detective Conan,” will be closing permanently after 24 years of business.

And to top it all off, the publisher is holding a clearance sale on all of its comic books with prices starting at 2 RM per book.

“We would like to announce that we will be having a sale. From April 11th to May 26th we will be offering discounts of up to 50%,” reads a post on Tora Aman’s Facebook.

The sale will take place at Tora Aman’s main store at 9, Jalan BK 1/18, Kinrara Industrial Park, Bandar Kinrara, 47100 Puchong Selangor.

The store is open every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until stocks run out.

Tora Aman is one of the largest comic publishers in Malaysia, which has translated many Japanese comics into Malay and Chinese.

Their most popular titles are of course “Doraemon” and “Detective Conan”, but the publisher has also published other popular titles such as “Great Teacher Onizuka”, “Slam Dunk” and “Captain Tsubasa”.

Due to the presence of online comic platforms today, the local publisher has decided to stop its publishing activities as its sales have declined sharply in recent years.

The closure of Tora Aman came shortly after Comics House, another local publisher that published translated titles of “Dragon Ball,” “Crayon Shin-chan,” “One Piece,” “Naruto” and “Bleach,” ended its 21-year publishing operation in October last year.
