Katy ISD adopts the Texas Way Sportsmanship Initiative

Katy ISD has joined a large group of school districts across the state in joining the Texas Way Sportsmanship Initiative, encouraging participants, coaches and spectators to demonstrate sportsmanship and a positive attitude during athletic competitions this school year.

“With Katy ISD’s fall sports in full swing, we want to congratulate our athletes, parents and spectators for an excellent start to the season,” said a statement from the Katy ISD athletic department. “The Katy ISD athletic department always expects spectators at any sporting event to demonstrate sportsmanship and provide positive verbal support for their team. We will always strive to provide a great experience for all athletes, spectators and officials by providing a safe and positive competition environment.”

The goal of the Texas Way is to create sportsmanship and a positive competitive environment while reducing ejections and promoting positive relationships between coaches, athletes, officials and spectators. To accomplish this, there are three pillars that Katy ISD asks all coaches, players and spectators to adhere to. These three pillars are to have respect for others and honor all participants involved, to be in control of oneself and control one’s anger in the face of competition and adversity, to embrace the spirit of competition and to do one’s absolute best without sacrificing one’s integrity.

“Ultimately, we want all athletes to have the opportunity to compete, and we want to provide a first-class experience for spectators at our events,” the Katy ISD athletics department said in a statement. “We appreciate your support!”

“The Texas Way” is a joint campaign of the Texas High School Coaches Association, the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association and 2Words Character Development.
