The Umbrella Academy showrunner reveals spin-off idea: “Gerard Way has ideas”

When asked if he would like to see the series return in any form, Blackman exclusively told RadioTimes.com: “Absolutely. Ultimately it’s up to Netflix. I would do several spin-offs.”

“I really hope this isn’t the end of the Umbrella Academy or the Umbrella Academy universe. I think there are a lot more stories to be told with other characters as well, not just this family.

“I think Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, who created it, put a lot of thought into it as well. So I hope this is not the end, but we’ll see.”

And what is his favorite idea for a spin-off? “I can definitely say that there are stories at the Commission, there are some unresolved things with Hazel and Cha Cha that I would like to talk about. There are a lot. I have quite a few ideas actually.”

The cast also revealed that they are interested in the show returning. Ritu Arya, who plays Lila, said, “I will never stop playing Lila. I love her.”

Aidan Gallagher, actor from “Number Five,” added: “I agree, the characters can go to many places.”

Robert Sheehan, who plays Klaus, said: “Never say never!” and Luther actor Tom Hopper added: “It would have to be Steve who does it. But never say never when it comes to getting the band back together.”

Blackman also admitted that he burst into tears while writing the final script for the show, telling us, “It’s so sad (to say goodbye). It’s really sad. I had such a great time with these actors and the crew and the writers, so I knew it was coming to an end, but I didn’t think I would be this emotional.”

“I remember writing the last scene of the last script, the finale, and thinking, ‘Oh, I’ll never write these characters again.’ I had tears in my eyes.”

The Umbrella Academy seasons 1-4 are now streaming on Netflix.
