India donates four BHISM cubes to Ukraine

New Delhi: India has decided to gift four cubes of Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita & Maitri (BHISHM), a mobile hospital to provide emergency medical care, to Ukraine, officials said on Friday.

They noted that the government has launched the BHISHM initiative under the Aarogya Maitri project, a programme to provide essential medical supplies to developing countries as part of humanitarian assistance, which provides an opportunity to provide all basic facilities and equipment for emergency medical care in a user-friendly and rapidly deployable manner.

The decision to gift four such cubes to Ukraine was taken ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ukraine, which is embroiled in a protracted war with Russia.

The mobile hospital is set up by packing all essential medicines and equipment in a well-organized manner in cubic boxes (15 inches each) and sorting them according to the types of injuries and medical problems that may arise in a war or natural disaster.

They said these mini-cubes would then be placed on a frame that is adjustable and stable and allows for transport by multiple modes of transport (air, sea, land and drone). In fact, the mini-cubes could be carried by one person as their maximum weight is 20 kg.

One cube, officials said, has the capacity to treat around 200 cases of different types in emergency situations, such as trauma, bleeding, burns, fractures, shock, apart from managing the initial triage and classification.

It can also support basic surgical procedures and generate its own power and oxygen in limited quantities and for a limited period of time, they added.
