Virgin Australia has announced that it has renewed its partnership with Air New Zealand under a trans-Tasman codeshare agreement.
The two airlines previously had a codeshare alliance that began in October 2010 and ended in October 2018.
Under the renewed agreement, Virgin Australia customers will be able to book direct Air New Zealand flights to Auckland Airport (AKL), Wellington International Airport (WLG) and Christchurch Airport (CHC), complementing Virgin Australia’s service to Queenstown Airport (ZQN).
However, Virgin Australia’s existing services between Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD), Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Brisbane Airport (BNE) to Queenstown will not be part of this alliance.
Velocity members can also earn and redeem points and eligible members and guests have lounge access on flights across the Tasman Sea.
“Australians share our love for New Zealand and its national airline and we can’t wait to revitalize this partnership before the end of the year,” Alistair Hartley, Virgin Australia’s chief strategy and transformation officer, said in a statement.
“The regulator’s endorsement reflects the strong benefits the partnership brings to the consumer, including better value, more choice and loyalty rewards for travellers across the Tasman Sea,” Hartley added.
On 6 June 2024, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) approved unilateral trans-Tasman code-sharing agreements between Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand.
“We are pleased that the sharing of resources by these airlines will provide consumers with more ticket and pricing options on trans-Tasman routes,” ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh said.
“Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand can also work together to offer corporate discounts and a range of marketing options. Additionally, eligible Virgin Australia customers will have access to the benefits of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program and access to international lounges,” Keogh said.
