The Balinese bathroom trend explained

The Balinese bathroom trend explained

Tropical decor is all the rage in interior design right now, but if you really want to make your home look like an island paradise, doesn’t the bathroom matter too? Here’s everything you need to know about the oh-so-zen bathroom trend from Bali.

Balinese interior design: How to design a bathroom in Bali

Need some rest and relaxation? A flight to a tropical paradise might seem a little far-fetched, but of course the next best thing is to bring that tropical paradise to your doorstep – or more specifically, to your bathroom. While many British homes don’t have outdoor showers or sea views, there are plenty of ways to make your space more tranquil. That’s where the Balinese aesthetic comes in.

So what defines Balinese interior design? As Mike Whitfield, luxury interior design expert at LUSSOexplains: “It’s a style that beautifully combines Bali’s rich cultural heritage with elegant, contemporary aesthetics, creating spaces that are both tranquil and modern. This unique blend offers a retreat-like atmosphere and is perfect for those looking to add tranquility to their home.”

Of course, there’s no better place to instill some calm than your bathroom. The Balinese bathroom trend is all about warm colors, natural materials and high-quality finishes that come together to create a minimalist yet sophisticated space. Here are Mike’s tips on how to achieve the look.

Start with a warm color palette

Don’t be afraid to ditch the white color scheme—after all, choosing darker shades better reflects the natural landscape. “Earthy tones like brown, green and terracotta create a more earthy atmosphere,” explains Mike. For a particularly sophisticated look, opt for “a freestanding bathtub in dark natural tones like charcoal, complemented by light, neutral stone tiles to add brightness to the space.”

Integrate rustic textures

“Texture is the key ingredient in creating the perfect Balinese-inspired space,” notes Mike. “I recommend using wood finishes to create a rustic look, combined with stone sinks – especially those with deep, curved designs – to really capture the essence of Balinese luxury.” To bring the outdoors even more indoors, he recommends “using natural materials like bamboo, rattan and greenery.”

Focus on minimalism

“Putting too much into a room can make it feel cluttered, which goes against the open-plan concept of Balinese design,” says Mike – so minimalism is key. “Bring your bathroom to life through tiles, colours and decor before enhancing your scheme with simple accessories like plants and flowers.”

Upgrade your fittings

“Alongside a soothing bath, a spa-like shower experience is essential,” says Mike. “I recommend a powerful thermostatic shower and rainfall showerhead to provide the ultimate spa experience. Complement this with fluffy towels and soft bathrobes for ultimate comfort after a relaxing shower or bath.”
